Healthcare discussion

It has been the buzz for weeks and the debate is still really sizzling. I would love to hear you thoughts on the issue. You may wish to comment on.
Is health care a right or a privilege?
How can we reduce the cost of care?
If we have universal care would that justify more government regulation of our lifestyles?
Is health care rationing an issue that should be considered?
Is health care in the United States the best in the world?
Or other ideas you have on the issue.

  1. I think basic emergency healthcare should be--and is--a right in a country as developed as the United States. I don't think free healthcare in every situation is necessarily a right though. One of the complains about the healthcare system today is that charity care costs hospitals too much--however, but cutting costs and streamlining systems in other areas, those costs can be accounted for.

  2. I think health care should be a right to an extent. We can reduce the cost of health care if the health care providers would make people just pay less for it. The universal health care I don't think would give the government more regulation of our lifestyles and if it did, I don't think it would give them very much. I think the health care issue is one that very much should be considered because health care is a valuable thing and can save lives, but many people don't have it. Health care in the United States is not the best in the world.

  3. i can see how people think healthcare would be something you need to earn, but since we ARE living, and we ARE here, shouldnt we have the right to healthcare?

    ReplyDelete
  4. I think it should be a right too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I agree that health care should be a right to some extent.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes Chan, we SHOULD have the right to health care, but many people still don't have it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think that the United States has one of the best Health Care in the world also.

    ReplyDelete
  8. i agree with Kalie to an extent... It should not be abused however

    ReplyDelete
  9. Most people dont have health care because they cant afford it

    ReplyDelete
  10. The United States, in terms of the 19 developed countries, is ranked 19th.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i think that health care is a right and everyone should have it

    ReplyDelete
  12. so exactly how do we make it affordable? or do we just go to universal healthcare?

    ReplyDelete
  13. But Kalie, we rank behind 18 other industrialized nations in our healthcare services.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with gabriel

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that healthcare in the United States is not the best in the world. We have some of the best medical technologies and a lot of Americans are not even insured because they can not afford it. If we have all this technology and we are not using it I believe its kind of a waste. All people should be able to get some kind of coverage for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with jared that it shouldn't be abused

    ReplyDelete
  17. thank you jared :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Carrie, the government-regulated universal healthcare WOULD give the government more control over our everyday lives. For example, since junk food contributes to obesity and obesity costs the healthcare system a lot of money, the government would soon be taxing or restricting junk food.

    ReplyDelete
  19. United States does have the best in health care for quality and the technology and experiance the doctors have and such, but the doctors won't spend enough time trying to correctly diagnose the patient, so in that retrospect it could greatly improve. People aren't getting what they pay for.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that if you have a pre-existing condition you should not be denied

    ReplyDelete
  21. i agree with kaile

    ReplyDelete
  22. i disagree with kalie, because out of all of the industrialized countries in the world the United states ranks at the very bottom for Health Care.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think health care is a right. Everyone should be allowed to have health care no matter how much money you have or don't have. I also believe that health care shouldn't be free, but it should be of little cost. So that everyone can receive it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If we go to a universal health care system, bureaucrats will get to decide terms and treatment for patient. This will lengthen the gap between doctor and patient, thus creating an even worse environment for health care. And also agree with Taylor. Make the equipment available to patients.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with the health care reform on ensuring vision, hearing, dental health care to children. I would like to have known whether it was to a specific age or if it was for school kids like if it would go up through college because one is still in school...I never found deeper information on that issue which I would have liked to know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i agree with carrie

    ReplyDelete
  27. Chloe, I think they are taxing junk food in some places and I don't see a problem with that. If they really want that junk food, then I don't think a tax is going to stop them from buying it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Today around 47 million people in the U.S. don't have healthcare

    ReplyDelete
  29. i believe that if health care insurers are not allowed to discriminate based on age and if you have a long term health problem. They should help out the people who need it most, rather than those who are healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. okay. so the US is awesome, no? then how can we make our awesome country have amazing rights and healthcare without upsetting some religious group...or other groups

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think we need to focus more on prevention! We don't need the government to FORCE us to live a healthy lifestyle--we should be able to do it ourselves, as a nation. With a healthier population overall, we'd save tons of money on healthcare without needing hugely-expensive government reforem

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree that health care should be a right but I feel not everything of health care is a right. I do agree that everyone should be able to receive health care. Also that health care should be aimed at preventing diseases and encouraging wellness. I mean I would rather spend the money to prevent something than trying to stop it from spreading or kill the infection or virus.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The tax on junk food, to my knowledge, is based on a tax for all food in those states and , as such, it is not a specific tax on junk food.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i agree with kristin

    ReplyDelete
  35. i agree kristin...i think they meant all children but they never did say an age

    ReplyDelete
  36. 101,000 Americans die each year because they didn't have insurance.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Carrie, EXACTLY!! That's why it's retarded of them to tax something that people are going to buy anyway. For instance, taxing cigarettes--if they raise the price of cigarettes by a dollar, the people are still going to buy cigarettes--they're just going to buy the cigarettes instead of buying milk for their kid or something.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with kristin

    ReplyDelete
  39. i agreee with theblogger

    ReplyDelete
  40. i definaltly 29 ya de da.. we dont need to depend on the government

    ReplyDelete
  41. currently doctors and pharmacists are in a hurry to get the job done and get through as many patients as they can, without the best possible care.

    ReplyDelete
  42. they say they want to cover you when you get sick or lose your job, but if that person doesnt have a job, who pays for their health care....the people who have jobs and are already paying for their own health care

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think that medical providers need to spend more time concerning issues that they could prevent in people. If people do not get to the point of having an emergency when they are not insured then it will not come out of tax money by them declaring themselves bankrupt.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with Carrie. Universal health care would be a good thing since we are having a lot of problems with our health care system as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  45. To my own insight on the President's stance, he wishes to put the decisions more in the hands of the government. This would drive our country even closer to pure socialism, and that is against the guidelines of our forefathers. It may even be unconstitutional.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agreed chloe, prevention is the best way to make this work. Prevention measures are much cheaper than paying for the surgeries or services that people need once they're actually sick or in dire need of a life saving procedure.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the government should give certain "rewards" in the forms of tax breaks for people who are currently healthy and keep America's health care costs down. certain tests to prove your health qualifications will need to be taken such as being able to run a mile or proving your not addicted to crack.

    ReplyDelete
  48. what do you think of Obamas plan?

    ReplyDelete
  49. We need to have more choices on who we want to insure your families.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that it should be illegal for the insurance company to drop your coverage because you get sick.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree with Amber we need to make health insurance more stable!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, I HOPE they wouldn't trade cigarettes instead of milk for their kids, if they do then they probably have a problem, and should probably be looked into about having their kids removed from their care, but I can see what your getting at and I bet a lot of people would do that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i believe that if you are laid off from you job because of budget cuts or something outside of your control, then your current insurers healthcare plan should stay with you either until you are employed again or until you have a plan of equal or better healthcare.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with Da Blogger about how insurance companies should not discriminate on peoples age or health status. For example, there are many people with diabetes that cannot find an insurance to cover their insulin and needles, yet they need those supplies to survive.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Approximately 25 million Americans are underinsured.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The healthcare plan will make insurance more affordable.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kalie, I think in theory it's an excellent idea. However, he said that the plan wouldn't add to the national deficit, which I think is pretty much B.S., and I don't think the government should REQUIRE that people carry healthcare.

    ReplyDelete
  58. People who do not have health care will gain the most from the reform. They will not get health care no matter what with this reform.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think Obama has the right ideas in his plan and he is stepping forward to that goal.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree that health care should be a right. I believe that everyone should be able to receive health care. Also health care should be helping prevent diseases and encouraging wellness.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Three years ago nearly 50million Americans didn't have health insursance another 25million were underinsured

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with Obamas plan to put a cap on how much you can spend out of your own pocket.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Think of it this way for a second, would you want to be told you are fat and unhealthy when you can still run and wrestle and do everything a normal person can?

    ReplyDelete
  64. U have good insight Da Blogger

    ReplyDelete
  65. Agree with Andrew

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with Andrew. I agree that everyone should be able to get health care.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i agree with you too..haha it is :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree with kristin, we should cover people with type 1 diabetes no matter what their financial status is. however, if you have type 2 diabetes then it is more than likely your own fault that you have it and should not be America who pays the bills.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i believe that if a person gets laid off that they should recieve health care from the government because it is not there fault because they got laid off.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I agree with many others that insurance companies should have a limit on how much they can charge out-of-pocket, providing choices, encouraging prevention and wellness, giving more opportunities to seniors to stay in their home, to stock up on vaccinations for future needs, allowing insurance to be affordable for small businesses, to still be provided insurance if lost or changed jobs, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  71. if some kind of reform goes through, i think the rich will suffer, the poor will thrive, and the middle class will expand greatly. but if that happens, it's a monopolized system basically. but whatever happens happens.

    ReplyDelete
  72. i think insurance companies should be able to discriminate to some extent. for example, smokers, its their own fault. They are putting themselves at risk for health problems.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Health care insurers should also require people to have preventive screenings every six to twelve months free of charge in order to help prevent diseases that may arise later down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  74. the reform will cut cost for many families. It will even save money for business and even the government. The people have choices on who they want to be there doctor.

    ReplyDelete
  75. where did you get that fact kelsey?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I don't think "death panels" will ever happen...I don't think we're that far gone, as a society...however, I think some rationing will definitely be happening. I think death panels were a scare tactic though.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I agree with Kristin. No one should be denied health care and I believe that this is one thing that the new reform is right about. However, will there need to be limits on how much these people will be able to receive.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I agree with da blogger

    ReplyDelete
  79. I agree with Obama's plan. He just need to put some of his ideas forward. A lot of people talk about what they are going to do, but never do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I believe that healthcare is a right for all people. I do not think that it should just be given away people should have different payment plans. The government should make it available for all people but not require them to attain it.

    ReplyDelete
  81. No matter the reform, the lobbyists will try to get the majority to stop this since they want to line their pockets with money wrought from the misery and despair of uninsured people with endangered lives.

    ReplyDelete
  82. i some what agree with karly..

    ReplyDelete
  83. i agree with Taylor

    ReplyDelete
  84. I believe that Obama's plan will work if he has the peoples support. If people do not try to make this happen it wont work.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I agree with Whitney. Obama has a lot of good ideas

    ReplyDelete
  86. the united states has some of the best technogoly in the country but yet we rank 19th out of 19th, in industrialized nations

    ReplyDelete
  87. Morgan I agree with you, but what about those who abuse the system....should they receive it too?

    ReplyDelete
  88. What if people can count get health insurance out of your pocket because they got laid off but the reason they got laid off is because they werent working hard enough in the first place... like when wrong got laid off from wartburg, when we all know its cuz he wasnt workin hard enough

    ReplyDelete
  89. in obamas plan he wants to make low-cost coverage for individual and small businesses, but why should you pay more just because you are with a bigger business?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Firstammedment: I don't neccessarily agree with the whole diabetes type 2 because yes it may be there fault, but because its there fault does that give you the right to let them die if they cannot afford the supplies. I don't think so. Instead why not try to encourage or provide doctors for them to try and lose weight or a wellness plan, I mean something that gives them an alternative for a reasonable amount of time.

    ReplyDelete
  91. The US spends the most on health care. It is good that this it because we have some of the best equipment and doctors in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think that problems will arise if the government tries to raise taxes on things like fast foods and junk food to cut down on obesity in America and therefore lower the amount of money the government may need to spend on people with heart issues and other things due to obesity.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think that Obama's plan is good and i don't know that many American's will like it. No matter what the health care plan is you will always find people who are not satisfied with the system.

    ReplyDelete
  94. i agree with taylor

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think that obama is on a good start, in feb. he signed a act to have all kids insured to be

    ReplyDelete
  96. i agree with micah

    ReplyDelete
  97. The healthcare plan would give insurance companies more business.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think its crazy that Americans spend more money on healthcare than any other country and we are still ranked behind 18 other nations in medically preventable deaths!

    ReplyDelete
  99. I think that is a good plan Morgan. It will benefit many people even if they don't think it will.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The health care should definitely have some changes to it, and I think that with Obama's plan we will be heading in the right direction. Even it it will take awile before the problems are actually fixed. When the problems do get fixed, some people with probably still find another problem to complain about it though.

    ReplyDelete
  101. i agree with andrew. We have the best technology, best doctors, best medicine, most advanced treatments in the world yet people can not afford the care they need. Insurers need to help people get treatments and not turn them down.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Kelsey- I don't think the people that try to abuse the system should get all the benefits of the system. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Micah I agree...because you can't make everyone happy no matter what you do

    ReplyDelete
  104. Kristin: this is a good idea, prevention should be the focus. we need to focus on prevention and when someone still cant make it with other peoples help then they dont deserve the health care they cant afford.

    ReplyDelete
  105. i agree with kalie and he has a good start and still has alot of time in office

    ReplyDelete
  106. I think that the government would loose a-lot of support if they raised the fast food prices. The businesses might also fail because people wouldn't want to pay that kind of money. I don't think the government should get that involved.

    ReplyDelete
  107. to Da Blogger on ur comment above about free screenings. I don't believe free screenings would work well. Doctors are already going to be losing money due to the preventive measures they provide. These preventive measures are going to limit the number of actual procedures they do and will cut their incomes. They should still have these screenings but they should not be free

    ReplyDelete
  108. Morgan-- I agree with that because if they abuse the system they are going to keep doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Taylor- I half agree with you, but I also see it that people have to eat so they won't let the cost bother them

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think that another issue is health care providers get paid more if they fit a larger group of people into a small time frame. This means they don't have time for preventative patients and are more likely to make dumb mistakes that they would not normally make because they are in a hurry.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Health care is a right everyone should be able to have the right to make sure they are healthy and to make sure every one else is healthy

    ReplyDelete
  112. I don't know if it is possible to make health care cheaper. maybe we should just have universal health care

    ReplyDelete
  113. I totally agree with you Kelsey. People will abuse the system and if you give them too much they will continue to abuse it.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think that health care is a right that everyone should have and that this reform could have great outcomes, however, there will be many things that will have to be worked out in order for this plan to work properly.

    ReplyDelete
  115. You have all been making some very insightful comments. I think it is important to understand that when something is a right it is very hard to take it away from someone. If we claim health care as a right it probably becomes unacceptable to deny someone care even if they are plainly responsible for their health issue. An example might be a person having liver disease from a life of excessive drinking.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I as a citizen am concerned about the idea of a system where people have little reason to take care of their health. If we were to go to Universal health care some people may not concern themselves with a healthy life and falsely think health care was free. Universal health care isn't free it is just paid for in a different way.

    ReplyDelete
  117. At the same time I don't like the idea of the government having justification to control our lives even more than they already do.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I think if we went to universal healthcare the government would really press prevention and even if people don't get the message through their heads about it the government could start really rationing healthcare for preventable conditions.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I agree that we need more freedom as American citizens

    ReplyDelete
  120. I agree with Jared about the free screenings.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Me too, that's a good idea. But what if that screening comes up with a problem? Then who pays for that?

    ReplyDelete
  122. I agree with Mr. Carlson some people will get the idea in their head that healthcare is free.

    ReplyDelete
  123. the governments plan thinks that that health care will be more stable and secure.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I agree that the government should not meddle in our lives more. I even think a bit less control would be better. This is the United States of America. We are based on free choice and free thinking, not governmental control and power.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I think that there should be a better variety of insurances offered at different prices so that American families do not have to decide on paying rent or health care premiums.

    ReplyDelete
  126. A lot of people think that *now*--they don't understand that "free healthcare" under a universal healthcare plan still has to be paid for somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  127. i disagree with the free screenings idea because that system will get taken advantage of way too quickly. hypochondriacs and anyone who thinks they have the slightest injury will get their free screenings and not be solving any problems with their health

    ReplyDelete
  128. With the reform, hospitals wont have to do charity care.

    ReplyDelete
  129. If one is in hiding, don't light a fire

    ReplyDelete
  130. I agree with Chaley2934. People hear that it is free and there is no such thing as free! Everything has to be payed for somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  131. The republicans want to have promotions and disease prevention. So that are country will be healthier. They don't want put Washington in control of patient care.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Exactly FirstAmendment. This would just create more hassles and problems, especially for hypochondriacs. Then they would walk around thinking that the equipment is faulty and then sue the hospital for malpractice, just putting back to square one.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Well, there should be a *limit* on how many free screenings, FirstAmendment. For instance, say a mammogram is recommended every two years for women over forty (or something like that). So every two years, any women over forty could get a free mammogram. They couldn't just go in anytime they felt like it.

    ReplyDelete
  134. i agree with taylor because some people cant afford good insurance

    ReplyDelete
  135. Morgan-- excatly....if they do it once they'll do it agian, so there needs to be a stop to it

    ReplyDelete
  136. In every situation there will be people taking advantage of something I think free screenings could possibly turn out to be a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  137. while free screenings are good and all(and will help prevent diseases from being spread around), they have to be payed for. and who's gonna pay it? we are, but it needs to be decided how important this issue really is to the US

    ReplyDelete
  138. Gabriel--You don't think hypochondriacs who HAVE health insurance now don't already do that? It wouldn't be any different.

    ReplyDelete
  139. to jared and morgan, i still believe that they should give free screenings because the doctors may be loosing some of their incomes but the free screenings will allow any body, even those without much money to get prevenative care. the doctors already have rather large incomes compared to people and a downsize in their mansion from free prevenative screenings will save alot of money over the long run. People wont be able to take advantage of it because they are only allowed one every six to twelve months.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I agree with chaley2934, there needs to be a limit or else the screenings will be overused.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I agree with chaley 2934. I think that placing limits on the free screenings but still allowing them is a good idea!

    ReplyDelete
  142. i think the gov't has a lot of improving to do before they even pass this bill

    ReplyDelete
  143. Yeah, there should be a limit, but how do you decide what the limit should be for free screenings? you could have a healthy person that needs only one screening vs. a sickly cancer patient

    ReplyDelete
  144. I think that if you have something like type one diabetes, that is not your fault you should be covered. But if you have something you could have prevented you shouldn't be covered.

    ReplyDelete
  145. There is no foot which does not stumble

    ReplyDelete
  146. I agree with chole on the limits on free screenings

    ReplyDelete
  147. But then what would happen should they need a screening on the spot for possible breast cancer later in that two year span? Would they be forced to pay for it? And chaley2934, that's my point. With free screenings we would just be in the mess we currently are in but with slightly different circumstances.

    ReplyDelete
  148. i agree with jared from 8:26 yesturday doctors are goin to be put under alotta stress from the reform

    ReplyDelete
  149. If there were free screenings i would just go in and get one whenever i was allowed to even if i knew there was nothing wrong with me. and that is what everyone else will do as well. free screenings would cost too much to even be considered

    ReplyDelete
  150. Time destoys all things!

    ReplyDelete
  151. what are you talking about kelsey

    ReplyDelete
  152. I think everyone should be able to be covered. Someone shouldn't die because they cant get health insurance.

    ReplyDelete
  153. noone puts both feet into the river to test its depth

    ReplyDelete
  154. One falsehood spoils a thousand truths!

    ReplyDelete
  155. We need to get out of the war and then worry about healthcare.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Haleigh, certain illnesses are only preventable to a certain extent. Some of the "preventable" diseases are feared in our DNA and appear no matter what we do.

    ReplyDelete
  157. baboons do not stray far from the place of their birth

    ReplyDelete
  158. I think that its crazy that Americans spend more money on healthcare than on housing and food and we have the most advanced medical technologies. Why should we have uninsured people if so much of our money is going into healthcare? President Obama's budget office estimated that by 2025 one of every four dollars will be tied up in our health system.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Whether or not they would have to pay for it depends on if they pass this healthcare plan, of course. I'm only talking about whether free screenings would be beneficial, not how they relate to Obama's plan.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Haliegh, how do u plan on paying for millions of uninsured people to keep them from dying?

    ReplyDelete
  161. why thank you Amber!!

    ReplyDelete
  162. I believe that people would take advantage of free screenings and it would just cost to much.

    ReplyDelete
  163. i agree with taylor

    ReplyDelete
